Cemetery in San Miguel Allende

Cemetery in San Miguel Allende

The cemetery is located on the northern edge of the city, in the Valle del Obraje, where three elements stand out: an aqueduct, a dam —both built of masonry in the 19th century— and a large rocky promontory that remains a constant presence overlooking the valley. The arrangement of each building establishes a continuous dialogue with the landscape.

The central idea structuring the project is to create a journey that leads from the everyday world of the city to one of introspection and contemplation. This is achieved through the placement of the architectural program’s elements along the path: a flower market that welcomes visitors to the site, the wake building that separates the world of the living from that of the dead, and the burial grounds, which include crypts, columbaria, the crematorium, and an open chapel as the culmination of the route.

The project also establishes a boundary for the future growth of San Miguel de Allende, preventing the formation of an unstructured urban periphery.
